Michelle Monareng (*1991) is a South African artist based in Johannesburg.

Her project “Removal to Radium” looks at memory and heritage through an archive of her late grandfather centered around the return of land to a community that was forcibly removed from it. Her research on the archive has led her to explore the role of the Berlin Mission in land disputes as well as the Natives Land Act of 1913.

The project performs an undoing of archival interpretations and reallocates and transforms factual information into the realm of artistic imagination. It is a collection of videos, documents, photographs and sound exploring themes of landscape, memory and ways of looking at the past as a sensed place.
