Cloud Chatanda (*1974 Tanzania) has been an illustrator and painter since he was seven years old. In 1990, he was one of the lucky few to receive an art education from Kinondoni Young Artists, an NGO dedicated to supporting visual artists and helping them begin their professional life. Cloud Chatanga began to do illustration using watercolors, inks, pastels, and has created educational books and educational comics ever since. For his Kingo comics he won awards –and declared that while he is greatly interested in developing his talent in painting, he loves comics because he can translate real life into a drawing.

Cloud Chatanga’s work has been shown at the 2013 East African Biennale, and recently had an exhibition at Nafasi Art Space, called ‘Black Tomato’, where he comments on modern life in Tanzania with sharp observations, critiques and humor. In October 2014, he also prepared a major solo show called Eight Years of Waiting at the Alliance Française, a review of which can be read here.
